Subject: [*] Global Village Teleport ARA slower-speed scripts
Since AppleTalk Remote Access apparently does not support varying the speed
of the connection, on marginal lines it is sometimes necessary to connect at
a slower speed. Otherwise, a burst of noise can cause the modems to attempt
to retrain and hang up the ARA connection.
These scripts from Global Village allow connections at various slower baud
rates for the Teleport modems.

Subject: [*] Macintosh DL Viewer 1.0b1
Finally, a DL-style animation viewer for the Macintosh.
Enclosed is a StuffIt! archive containing a Macintosh application which will
allow Mac users to view DL-style animation files. This program handles both
Version 1 and 2 file types, and handles format 0 (large, 320x200), 1 (medium,
160x100) and 2 (small, 80x50) animations.
DLViewer 1.0b1 is my first cut at providing an animation viewer for various
non-Macintosh animation files. It does not use QuickTime(tm) so it should
work on any Macintosh that can support 256 (8-bit) color. It does require
System 6.0.2 or beyond and Color QuickDraw 1.2.
The animation images are all read into memory for maximum display speed. This
implies of course that for large animation files an equivalently large amount
of memory is used.
In addition to the animation itself, I have also provided the ability for
smaller images to be "zoomed" (160x100 -> 320x200; 80x50 -> 160x100 _and_
320x200). The 80x50 images look very pixelated when zoomed up to 320x200, as
you might expect. Up to 10 DL files can be opened (but not run!)
concurrently. The real constraint will more likely be how much memory you
allocate to the viewer to run.
Finally, since DL animations do not have a built-in frame rate the frame rate
for each animation can be individually specified and adjusted.
Thanks to Mark Podlipec who wrote XANIM, an X-Windows animation viewer. His
sources provided the insights and clues to decipher all the formats that DL
files use.

A big problem with using a Mac as an X-terminal to a Unix box (eg Mac-X)
is that Unix uses a 3 button mouse, and the solution to this in Mac-X is
clumsy (using the arrow keys).
Does anyone know about using a three button mouse on a Mac? I have seen
them advertized, but apparently the other buttons can only be programmed
to cut, paste etc... in normal Mac applications.

My experience with 3M is pretty negative. Perhaps they have

Anyone else care to refute that with good results in the last few

A very good reason to use Nisus, which has multiple Undos that work
even past a save. I've done this sort of thing numerous times, but I just
Undo back a few more actions and everything is fine again. Nisus's
Undo capabilities do not of course work past closing a document, so
that's still a problem if you panic and close the document after erasing

Subject: Auto Save programs
Someone made a post several days ago looking for Sav-o-matic to
automatically save their documents in MS Word and MS Excel. If you are
using recent versions of these programs (5.0 and 4.0,
respectivly), Auto save functions are already built in to these
programs.
In Word, Call up the preferences window. Under the Open and Save
section, there is a check box for "Save Reminder," and a field you can
set for the delay. Simply turn it on, set the delay, and you are in
business.
It is a little more complicated in Excel. The Auto Save function is an
Add-in function in the macro library (you did install that, didn't
you?). Call up the Add-in manager from the option menu, go get a cup of
coffee or a sandwich. Five minutes later, when the Add-in manager has
finally loaded, It will show you a list of all the Add-in functions you
have installed. Click on the add button, and locate the Auto Save
add-in in the Macro Library folder. There should now be an AutoSave
item in the option menu. Select it, and you will be presented with a
dialog where you set the frequency, which for some reason gives you
nondescriptive choices like 'High' 'Medium' and 'Low', rather than
actual minutes.
Other nice features of using the built in save functions in Excel and
Word are that both ask you if you want to save first, rather than
blindly saving the file, perhaps at a bad time. Also, both work on ALL
open documents, not just the currently selected one. In fact, they work
even when the application is in the background.

I'm afraid I have to agree with David. One might argue that they made
a "strategic" decision to pull out of the Mac market, but they did the
same thing on the DOS side with Sprint, their word processor. It
seems Borland can't take a deep breath, they are out for a quick buck.

That's certainly true, although I'm sure it would drive you nuts if
instead of calling a Mac a Mac, I called it a Mock every time I used
the word. It means the same thing to both of us, but I'm using the
word incorrectly. My father just started using a Mac and insists on
calling ClarisWorks "Claris" since it's the only Claris program he
owns. That's all fine and nice, and I know what he means, but he will
have trouble communicating with anyone else about it. So there is
a good reason to use sensible and common terms.
Cyberspace may be one of those terms through usage, but as Paul notes,
its meaning is wrong. "Cyber" comes from the Greek word (excuse my
ASCII here) Kubernates, which most directly relates to the captain
of a ship, kuber, controller, and nates, a form of the word for ship.

In the US? I've never heard anyone use Hoover as a verb, certainly,
and only as a noun relating to the actual brand. Hoover is British
slang, I believe, and shows just how flexible language can be.
I do rather like the terms Rick Sutcliffe proposed, "Metanet" or "Metaspace."
Still, with the popularity of Gibson's cyberpunk (which is used in
a relatively correct manner) books, I doubt linguistic reason will
ever supplant the term cyberspace...

Subject: Disappearing color in StartUpScreen and General CDEV (A)
I got several helpful answers to my plea for help in
restoring color to my general CDEV and StartUpScreen.
Thanks to all who wrote.
The problem was that I had tried DesktopTextures, which
messed up my settings. Zapping the PRAMs as several
people suggested (option-command-p-r) restored the
StartUpScreen to color but did not fix the general CDEV.
What did finally solve the problem was following the
directions sent me by Robert Winston on how to use
ResEdit to fix the problem. Here is the note he sent me:
bx341@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Robert E. Winston)
Most likely, your desktop pattern, which is 'ppat' #16 in the
System file, is damaged. There are two ways to fix this.
1) Replace the system. If you do this be sure to drag the old
System file to the trash then startup with the System 7 Install
1 disk. If you don't trash the old system first, the installer
saves the desktop pattern from the old System file and puts it
in the new one. You will have accomplished nothing.
2) Use ResEdit.
<Insert your favorite ResEdit warning here>
Open the System file with ResEdit.
Double click 'ppat' and select and cut resource #16. This is
your current desktop pattern.
Double click 'ppt#'. This is where the color patterns live.
Double click resource #0, the only one.
On the right side of the picker, select any one of the color
patterns by single clicking it.
Copy and paste this pattern into 'ppat'.
Do a <Command> <I> or select "Get Resource Info" from the
Resource menu.
Change the ID# to 16.
Save and quit ResEdit.
You should now be able to select any of the color patterns in
the General Cdev.
> Even more interestingly, when I examined the cp[General
> control panel] on the Tidbits disk (an official disk,
> supplied by Apple), it lacked the color control as well.
The General doesn't really do anything itself and it doesn't
contain the desktop patterns. It's just a gateway to the System,
Finder, and PRAM. When you inserted the Tidbits disk and opened
the General cp, you were really looking into your System file.
> In addition, I cannot display startupscreens in color. When
> I open them with a graphics program they look fine; but when
> I do a startup they appear in black and white.
I could suggest zaping the PRAM to fix this problem, but the
apple.com types get all a twitter at the thought of promiscuous
PRAM zaping, so I won't.
Open the monitors cdev. Change the setting to B & W. Change it
back to color. Restart. Your startupscreen should be displayed in
glorious color. (And if that doesn't work, zap the PRAM)

Subject: DiskLight Problems?
Some time back I installed in my Mac II (running System 6 and
Multifinder) the "DiskLight" CDEV, which flashes a small icon in the
upper right corner of the menu bar every time your Mac does a disk
access. This can be helpful to let you know that your Mac is working
away, and not frozen or crashed.
In recent months I started having various system problems,
including in particular:
* I'd double-click on a document and get an "application missing"
message; double-click the same document a second time and it would
start right up.
* When I tried to print, especially longer documents from Textures, or
documents from larger applications like Mathematica, my Mac would
freeze partway through the handover process to PrintMonitor, and havbe
to be restarted
* Mathematica on my machine uses 6.4 MB of the 8 MB installed. Of ten
when I'd try to start up mma, with nothing else running, my machine
would freeze halfway through the loading process. After a restart,
mma would load fine.
Somewhere recently in the newsgroups I saw a hint that there might
be problems with DiskLight, so I removed it from my system; and since
then all the above problems have (knock on wood) disappeared.
I'm reluctant to post a negative message concerning DiskLight based
on just this one experience; but simply removing it did seem to
resolve all my difficulties. So, others might want to watch out for
similar problems; and perhaps the list of specific difficulties above
can give the author(s) of DiskLight some indication of what the
problem (if any) is with this CDEV.

Several ways: Etherlook or Get My Address are software that tell you the
ethercard number. If you install Telnet it'll tell you the Ethercard
number too. You have to be careful as for some reason I can't remeber
(if I ever knew) these means can make up numbers. The administrator can
check the number from his end by using EtherPeek across the Ethernet.

>
To the best of my knowledge, it won't. The modem is designed to distinguish
incoming faxes from voice, but even this is a problem for Macs.
The most recent ROM upgrade for the SupraFaxModem V.32bis (14.4k) is
advertised
as supporting what is referred to as Silent Answer, which will quietly
monitor an incoming call and listen for fax carrier signals. If it hears them
it'll then explicitly answer the call, interrupting any person or answering
machine that picked up first. This was designed to allow you to use
one line for voice and sending/receiving faxes. The problem
is that this doesn't work with the Fax software for the Mac, FaxSTF. I've
called both STF Technologies and Supra about the problem, and was told
(by STF) that they're presently stumped. They did all the program changes
Supra instructed them to do for Silent Answer in an unreleased SW version, but
it refuses to work. They continue to work with Supra and will hopefully solve
this problem.
I've also heard rumors of a user devised 'hack' that makes Silent
Answer work with FaxSTF, and would appreciate anyone passing it on.
> (2) does the Suprafax modem support voice mail features?
They've advertised this as a planned upgrade, which is not yet unreleased.

Dear colleagues:
As all our secretaries write on the Mac, we were also confronted
with the question of a good-looking & screen-readable font. We settled
on Palatino. It is slightly larger than Times in printing and much
more readable on the screen. Generally, all city fonts (New York,
Geneva etc.) are fine on the screen, but look aesthetically poorer in
printing compared to historically proven printer fonts. Palatino is
available from Apple as TrueType and built-in in postscript
laserprinters. -- Greetings, Michael.

Subject: Font ID Problems
Hello All!
I've been having a small problem with fonts that I've resolved but I really
don't know why it happened. Maybe someone out there can shed some light on
it!
I just upgraded to System 7.1 and hacked ATM so it would recognize the Fonts
folder. I then proceeded to put all my fonts (bitmap and postcript) into the
Fonts folder.
Whenever I use Zterm, instead of getting the correct Zterm font I always got
Helvetica 14. So, I checked the Font ID numbers and found that the Zterm
screen
font was 19337 and my Helvetica 14 was also 19337.
I removed Helvetica 14 from the Fonts folder and my problem was resolved.
Here are my questions:
(1) Why did the font conflict occur, it never had in the past? Are font
numbers
assigned dynamically?
(2) What can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again? Can I manually
change
Font ID numbers?
(3) I've noticed that each bitmapped size in my Helvetica Font has an ID
number
while some fonts only have one ID number for the entire family. Does this have
something to do with NFNT and old and new font formats?
Thank you very much for your assistance and I hope that many others will
benefit from your responses to this message.

This means that your machine doesn't have its symbolic name registered

since your machine isn't registered with your organization's
nameserver, they won't let you on.
The only way around this is to ftp from a machine that *is* registered
on a nameserver -- ie. a machine someone from somewhere else can find
by using a symbolic name like mymac.mydept.myuniv.edu instead of a
numerical name like 161.45.64.1 which is your case right now. (Or, get
your sysadmin to add your machine to the nameserver.)

Subject: Laser printers in a lab, HELP!
Greeting fellow netters. We are currently trying to offer laser printing
to

we
can do so. They are as follows:
o Laser printing is very expensive, how do we charge the users for
it?
o We need to be able to have both IBM's and Mac's connected to the
printer.
o How do we keep track of who is printing and how many pages?
We currently are running DEC Pathworks for networking all of our computers
together in the labs, so we can use Pathworks as a print spooler. What I
was
wondering is how other people have tackled the problem of billing. Are
there
any programs for both the Mac and IBM's that require a user to type in an
identification number before they can print? Is there some form of a devit
card
system like commonly used on copy machines? Any information on how to
manage
laser printers in a lab would be greatly appreciated! Also if anyone can
recommend a good lab laser printer that would also be very helpful! Thank
you
very much for your time!

------------------------------------
I've done some research into this and found two alternatives for my labs.
a) you can use a debit card system like photocopiers, but it means
dedicating a machine (two-, 1 mac & 1 pc if you want to service both), and
the card reading equipment isn't cheap (I've seen prices starting at $1000
CDN., and going steadily up from there), let alone the machine that you
need to add money to cards.
b) there is a program for novell netware called PSERV (it is available from
a number of ftp sites) the fee is something like $150 NZ (whatever that
works out to), and requires a dedicated machine (an XT works). Then using
standard novell queues both Macs and PCs can print to the PSERV (of course
this assumes that you have mac support for your novell server). Using
either Novell accounting or btrieve, you simply credit a users account for
X dollars, and then the PSERV debits their account by y per page. At the
end of each job the PSERV prints a banner page with job costs and account
balances.
I'm currently working on the PSERV option here. We already have Novell, so
this makes life fairly simple. Students just see the lab monitors, request
an account, and then credit their accounts (via the monitors) with money
as needed.
Hope this helps.

One important thing to note is that a lot of people have

There is a 60 day money back guarantee, so for ~$10 shipping

there is no general answer to your question about the inversion of a

Apple only supports the Q700 up to 4MB SIMMs but 8MB and 16MB SIMMs are
theoretically possible (and mentioned in TN 176).
What is important here is that the 4 SIMM slots in the Q700 must ALL be

I was wondering if anyone could tell me

Subject: POWERBOOK AND MIXED DRINKS
Right now I am dialing in from Hawaii and since I still remember info-mac
as the best and most popular forum for Mac questions I decided a long
distance call would be worth the trouble and expense.
One:
Here's a word from a friend of mine that does not have Internet access:
Hey, don't you want to upgrade to one of those fabulous new Powerbooks?
If so, I want your old 100. Any configuration. I am moving to another
island for a few months and need a basic portable Mac-the 100 would suit
my needs perfect. January 26 is my deadline. Thanks!
Don't worry about the deadline, but if you are interested contact me as soon
as possible, I try to check my e-mail about every two to three days.
Two:
Does anyone know of a Macintos specific document (Hypercard perhaps?) that
would have an extensive list of recipes for mixed alcoholic drinks. If you do
p
please let me know the location and file name.
Three:
Right now I am on the island of Maui. I have to say that I think everyone
shoul
d come to this island at least once in their lives. i've been here for a
five or six months and just being here gives you a healthier perspective
on life (not to mention the constant smile on your face).
Thanks for any replies that I might get.

Subject: Radius Rockets etc
An acquaintance of mine has a rather involved problem involving Radius
Rocket boards. He's trying to drive an Agfa Imagesetter using a IIcx with
a 25 MHz RadiusRocket board, and he finds that the performance he's getting
just isn't fast enough to satisfy his needs, whether the Rocket drives the
Imagesetter or whether it's the IIcx that's driving the Imagesetter (in
which case the Rocket is actually serving the user). When the Imagesetter
is in action, he says, juddering mouse movements and halting typing show
the Mac is under great strain.
Money is pretty tight but he was thinking of selling the IIcx to buy a much
faster Mac on which to install the Rocket to drive the Imagesetter. I have
some doubts about whether this will satisfy his needs, even if he goes for a
Quadra 950, because it sounds to me like the performance hit caused by the
Imagesetter is too great for one Mac to cope with, even augmented by a
Rocket board - it would be better in my view to have the IIcx drive the
Imagesetter more or less exclusively, and to buy another, not necessarily
blindingly fast Mac to be used for most of the ordinary work.
But then I know little about Imagesetters or Radius Rockets, so I may be
telling him pretty silly things. What do others think?

Subject: Rotated text on Deskwriter C
I am trying to print rotated text from Freehand 2.02 on an HP DeskWriter
500C. The Mac IIci is using System 6.0.8 with ATM. The font is Times, 14
point, the orientation is landscape, the ink is black. The problem is
that the text that is at a 90 degree angle is jagged, as if it were
printed on an ImageWriter. The text which is in a standard orientation
is fine. I have not seen this problem in PageMaker. Does anyone know how
to resolve this problem?

Not only is it scary, it's *true*... I used to use "Saviour" which does

Subject: Updates on 2 questions I asked recently
Over the last few weeks, I have asked -- and received answers to -- two
separate questions, one of lost icons and one on AutoClock's death. This is
just a quick note to report what the answers were -- both stock, of course.
1: Missing icons after rebuilding disks. The disk rebuild, of course, caused
the desktop(s) to rebuild. The stock suggestion was to use command-option-
esc, etc. to force a rebuild. The next time I rebooted I held down the
magic keys until it asked if I wanted my first disk's desktop rebuilt (yes)
and then the second's (yes). It said it would do it as soon as it was
finished rebooting, and went merrily on for a while. I didn't watch the
whole process but, after getting coffee or whatever, found the reboot
complete and the icons still generic instead of application specific. It
was not until I used one of the "anti-finders" and skipped disk 1 but
forced
disk 2 (and watched it really rebuild) that it was fixed. The solution was
the obvious one, but I had some trouble making it happen (despite onscreen
assurances that it would be ...).
2: AutoClock ran finew for months and then died. Replacing the application
and
then the OS from backups didn't change it. The vbersion that didn't work
under System 7 worked fine if I rebooted under System 6. Obviously some
related file (data, preferences, whatever) was bad -- but I couldn't find
one. The file turned out to be the Preferences for AutoClock Extension,
_not_ the actual application. The application eveidently interacts with
its
extension (which does the autodialing for updating, etc.) on startup, and
deleting that extension was what was needed.
As always, thanks for the posted and e-mailed advice from all.

Subject: Pop Server installation on IBM RS/6000
We plan to install Eudora in our Campus.
According to the documentation, I have to install a POP3 Server in our Unix
Machin. Our Unix machin is an IBM RS/6000. I download popper-1.831beta from
ftp.cc.berkeley.edu. In the documentation, I see that this software has been
successfully tested on some operating systems. But AIX is not in this list.
So I have some questions about that.
Does someboby have already install this software (or an other POP3 Server
software) on AIX?
Is it really hard or easy to install it on AIX?
Thank's in advance.
